A step-by-step handling reference for the PURETIDES research pen. Provided for laboratory and research workflow guidance only.

Step 1: Prepare

  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling the pen.
  • Remove the protective pen cap.

Step 2: Inspect the pen

Inspect the pen

  • Visually confirm the PURETIDES pen is intact, full and that the solution is clear and colourless.

Step 3: Open a new needle

Open a new needle

  • Take a fresh single-use needle and peel back the paper tab.
  • Do not attach the needle until you are ready to dispense.

Step 4: Attach the needle

Attach the needle

  • Push the needle straight onto the pen tip and twist gently until secure.

Step 5: Remove the outer cap

Remove the outer cap

  • The needle is shielded by two caps — both must be removed.
  • Pull off the outer cap and keep it nearby for safe disposal later.

Step 6: Remove the inner cap

  • Pull off the inner cap and discard it.

Step 7: Prime the pen (new pens only)

  • Before the first use of any new PURETIDES pen, perform a flow check.
  • Rotate the dose selector until the flow-check symbol appears in the dose window.

Step 8: Confirm flow

Confirm flow

  • Hold the pen with the needle pointing up. Press and hold the dose button until the counter returns to 0.
  • A small droplet should appear at the needle tip. If nothing appears, repeat up to 6 times.
  • If still no droplet, change the needle and try once more. Do not use the pen if flow cannot be confirmed.

Step 9: Select your dose

Select your dose

  • Turn the dose selector until the desired dose lines up with the dose pointer.
  • PURETIDES pen click reference: 12 clicks = 1 mg · 24 clicks = 2 mg · 36 clicks = 3 mg.
  • Always confirm the dose visually in the dose window — never rely on click count alone.

Step 10: Check remaining solution

Check remaining solution

  • Turn the dose selector until it stops to see how much solution remains.
  • If the counter stops before your full dose, switch to a new pen — do not split doses across pens.

Step 11: Prepare the site

  • Choose your application site, wipe with an alcohol swab and allow the area to fully dry.

Step 12: Insert the needle

  • Insert the needle as directed by your research protocol.
  • Keep the dose window visible at all times — do not cover it with your fingers.

Step 13: Dispense the dose

  • Press and hold the dose button until the counter shows 0 and lines up with the pointer.
  • Keep the button pressed and the needle in place.

Step 14: Hold for 6 seconds

  • Count to 6 with the dose button still pressed to ensure the full dose is delivered.
  • Removing the needle early may cause solution to leak from the tip.

Step 15: Withdraw

Withdraw

  • Withdraw the needle, then release the dose button.
  • If a small amount of blood appears, apply gentle pressure with gauze — do not rub.

Step 16: Remove the needle

  • Carefully unscrew the needle from the pen. Do not re-cap the needle by hand to avoid needle-stick injury.

Step 17: Dispose safely

  • Place the used needle directly into a sharps disposal container.

Step 18: Re-cap the pen
STEP 18

Re-cap the pen

  • Replace the pen cap after every use to protect the solution from light.

Step 19: If no sharps container is available
STEP 19

If no sharps container is available

  • Use a one-handed recap method: slide the needle into the outer cap, then transfer to a sharps container as soon as possible.
  • Never refit the inner cap. Always remove the needle from the pen before storing.
